There is a process that directly processes consequences. The person who
sits there and runs concepts obligingly, and then sits there and waits, is
waiting for a consequence. This person's whole life is caged about by the
horrible consequences of his own actions. If he takes or makes any action
of any character or kind, there's going to be a consequence. He is not
certain of anything except this. If he were to kill a man, he'd get hanged. 
Only he doesn't even dare think that boldly. He thinks that if he were in a
restaurant and were to drop a teacup or make a slight clatter, immediately
the proprietor would come over and hit him on the head with a club.

This is the sort of life this person is leading. He's expecting
consequences for any action, and he believes that almost anything he does
will be a misdemeanor. And so, of course, he's not in motion and won't
indulge in effort. 

His life is devoted to making a cautious action and then being very careful
to observe whether or not something bad occurred. 

There is a process by which we ask a person to touch something and let go,
and find out if anything happened. 

We want this individual to discover what he himself is doing in processing.
Some other entity someplace or another is evidently sitting there being
processed. He is sitting there observing something being processed. This is
your rough case.

This individual will sit there and he will run this concept, and then will
wait to see if something happened. Nothing is going to happen. Nothing ever
will happen. Not to the end of time, if he sat there from there on out. The
person will keep on tell you time after time that nothing is happening. You
say, "That's right," and he thinks this is the most horrible thing that
ever happened to him. To have to sit there and do this because it is
totally idiotic.

But that isn't really idiotic. The whole motive is this: Do something, and
then observe whether or not something happened as a result thereof. We want
the person to discover at length that he can touch a chair and know he is
touching a chair and nothing occurs. 

The only reason he can't admit that he is touching the chair is that he
feels somebody else must be touching the chair. When he is touching the
chair, the only reason why he doesn't quite dare admit it is because he is
liable to be punished. He doesn't dare be source-point. This technique is
designed to move them square onto source point. They can't be anything
until they are on source point.

Recognize that the technique could be altered so as to produce no result.

You could say, "All right. Now touch your ear. All right. Wait for what
happens." Technique won't work. We want this individual directly to touch
something, and then sit back and discover for himself that no consequences
occur. The way we do this is to have him touch something and have him sit
back to see if anything happens. 

The command simply is this: "Touch your left knee. Let go of it. Now sit
back and see if anything happens." That is the command and that is the
technique, and that is the reason the thing is run. 

When you have a person who is sitting there trying to find out if something
is going to happen, you have a person who is afraid of consequences. All
you have to do is disabuse him of the fact that there are going to be
consequences for these insignificant actions, and he feels much better
about life. He can be source, and thereafter he can be something.
